Forbes Bivouac

Forbes Bivvy is a basic two-bunk backcountry hut managed by the Department of Conservation in the Rangitata and Rakaia Rivers area, within Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park (Canterbury). It’s free to use and works on a first come, first served basis—no bookings are required.

Access is not via a maintained DOC track, so you’ll need to plan your own route and navigate using map, compass, and GPS. The hut includes mattresses, a toilet (pit latrine), and a fireplace, but it has no drinking water; plan to bring your own water. Limited firewood is available—don’t cut vegetation for fuel.
