Heaphy Hut
Heaphy Hut is a 32-bunk Department of Conservation hut on the Heaphy Track in Kahurangi National Park (Buller area), used as a backcountry stop along the Great Walk route. It overlooks the Heaphy River mouth at the place where the river surges through a narrow gap to the sea.
Inside, the hut has gas cooking facilities, lighting and heating, individual bunk rooms with mattresses, sinks with cold running water, and flush toilets attached to the hut. Drinking water is untreated; you’ll need to treat water for drinking. You’ll also bring your own cooking utensils and a sleeping bag, as these aren’t supplied.
Bookings are required for Heaphy Track huts, and hut fees apply per person, per night (with different NZ and international rates across the year). The hut is on a Great Walk itinerary, and Backcountry Hut Passes/Backcountry Hut Tickets can’t be used at this hut.
