Herricks Hut

Herricks Hut is a basic five-bunk backcountry hut in Ruahine Forest Park (Hawke’s Bay region), managed by the Department of Conservation and maintained with volunteer support. It was built in 1960 and sits at about 460 m altitude in an area that’s relatively sheltered but largely isolated from other tracks and huts in the park.

Use is free and no bookings are required—first come, first served. The hut has tank water supply, and there are toilets with pit latrine disposal; drinking water is untreated, so plan to treat it before use. Access requires getting permission from the landowner to pass through Thorn Flat Station.
