Hooker Hut
Hooker Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park (Canterbury). It’s an eight-bunk serviced hut and the oldest hut in the park; it was moved and fully restored in 2020–2021, while keeping its heritage character. Use is by serviced bookings only, and access can be affected by snow and weather.
Inside, you’ll find a fireplace and a gas cooker, with firewood available in a locked woodshed (key is picked up at the Aoraki Mt Cook Visitor Centre). The hut has mattresses and a detached toilet. Drinking water is untreated. Bookings are required, and the local approach route starts along the Hooker Valley Track and then uses a poled route from the river-side section to reach the hut. Hooker Valley Track closures can occur during strong winds or heavy rain, with signage and a gate if the track is closed.
