Hooker Hut (removed)

Hooker Hut (removed) is a historic DOC alpine hut in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The hut was taken out in 2015 by helicopter for safekeeping and restoration, and it was later reopened in a new, more accessible spot about two hours’ walk into the Hooker Valley.

The hut is the oldest hut in the national park and was rebuilt after a series of earlier moves (1948, 1963, 1994) caused by unstable glacial moraine and erosion. It has eight bunks and is a serviced hut; adults pay $15 a night, children aged 11–15 pay $7.50 a night, and use is free for children aged 10 and below. Overnight stays require advance booking through the Aoraki/Mount Cook Visitor Centre, and it’s also tied into DOC’s online booking system.
