Ikawatea Forks Hut

Ikawetea Forks Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Ruahine Forest Park (Hawke’s Bay). It’s a standard seven-bunk hut used for self-contained hut nights with first-come, first-served use—no bookings are required.

Built in 1962 by the New Zealand Forest Service for deer-culling support, the hut was upgraded by the Ruahine Deerstalkers Association in 1990. Facilities include rainwater tank water and an open fire for heating, plus a pit latrine; the hut also has mattresses and a fireplace. To stay, buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut, or use a Backcountry Hut Pass that covers most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12-month period.
