Kākāpō Hut

Kākāpō Hut is a basic four-bunk backcountry hut in Kahurangi National Park (West Coast region), run by the Department of Conservation. It has four bunk beds and is set up for untracked backcountry access, so you’ll need to plan your route and navigate using a map, compass, and GPS rather than relying on a marked DOC track approach.

Use is free and no bookings are required; it’s first come, first served. The hut has a mattress and a fireplace, and toilets are provided with pit latrine disposal. No drinking water is provided, so plan to bring your own water and supplies for your overnight.
