Kauri Cottage
Kauri Cottage is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Coromandel Forest Park, set in the Kauaeranga Valley. It’s used as a base for exploring the valley, with the cottage and its grounds shared with Cookson Cottage.
The hut sleeps up to 10 people across three rooms (two people’s bunks in Room C, and bunks in Rooms A and B), and it has a heat pump. Bookings are required, check-in is after 3.00 pm and check-out is before 11.00 am, and you must bring all your own linen. Fees are listed up to 30 June 2026 at $161 per night plus a $50 cleaning fee (minimum stay 2 nights), and Backcountry Hut Passes and Backcountry Hut Tickets can’t be used here. There’s also a water hole about 5 minutes’ walk from the cottage, and valley walks range from about 20 minutes up to a full day.
