Kelly Knight Hut
Kelly Knight Hut is a standard eight-bunk backcountry hut in Ruahine Forest Park, run by the Department of Conservation. Use is on a first-come, first-served basis—standard hut bookings aren’t required—so arrive prepared to claim a bunk when you get there.
Facilities include a water source from a river, a woodstove for heating, platform bunks, and pit latrine toilets. There’s a fireplace and mattresses provided, and the fee is based on overnight stays: adult (18+) $10 per night, youth (5–17) $5 per night, and child/infant (0–4) free; place payment in the honesty box using a Standard Hut Ticket (or use a Backcountry Hut Pass). Access is via Mania Road and the Mania Road to Whanahuia Range track; from the track end, the route follows the tops (no track markers or signage for parts) to connect toward the Kelly Knight Hut to Pourangaki Hut track. The tops are exposed with strong winds common, and navigating requires expert skills.
