Kiwi Saddle Hut

Kiwi Saddle Hut is a backcountry hut in the Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke’s Bay region), used as a sheltered stop-over on tramps through the southern Kaweka. The hut is owned and maintained by the Heretaunga Tramping Club and is set on a saddle at about 1170 m, with conditions in this exposed area that can include sudden weather changes; brief snowfalls and heavy winter frosts are possible in cold southerlies.

Overnight use is first come, first served—no standard bookings are required. It sleeps 8 with 8 bunk beds and includes a wood-burning stove (enclosed) and a tank water supply (water is not treated). The toilet is a long-drop pit latrine.

Access from the road is via marked-trail approaches: from Cameron carpark it’s about 4 hours to the hut, while from Kiwi Mouth Hut it’s about 2–3 hours; there is also access via a poled route from Studholme Saddle via Castle Camp (from the north). Fees are not payable using Backcountry Hut Passes or Backcountry Hut Tickets; overnight stays are supported by a suggested donation to the managing club.
