Lawrence Bivvy
Lawrence Bivvy is a Department of Conservation basic two-bunk backcountry hut in the Rangitata/Rakaia Rivers area (Canterbury). It’s free to use and runs on a first-come, first-served basis with no bookings required. The hut has 2 bunks and basic sleeping provisions (mattresses), with a pit latrine provided and no drinking water.
Access is backcountry 4WD only: the formed 4WD track crosses the Clyde River via Erewhon Station, and you need to arrange permission with Erewhon Station. There is no DOC track access to the hut, so you must plan your route and navigate yourself with map, compass, and GPS. If you expect to cross unbridged rivers or side streams, be prepared to turn back or wait if conditions are unsafe.
