Lawrence Hut
Lawrence Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in the Rangitata/Rakaia Rivers area of Canterbury. It’s a standard six-bunk hut used for self-supported trips—no DOC track access, so you’ll need to plan your route and navigate yourself (map, compass, GPS) in the backcountry.
Use is first come, first served, and standard hut tickets are not something you book ahead of time; you pay via an honesty box at the hut using the standard hut ticket for each night (or a Backcountry Hut Pass that covers unlimited standard and serviced hut nights for 12 months). The hut has 6 bunks, with fireplace, mattresses, and a toilet system including a pit latrine; drinking water is untreated.
