Macaulay Hut

Macaulay Hut is a serviced 14-bunk backcountry hut in Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park (Canterbury), used as a base for Mackenzie Country and Waitaki-area trips. It’s owned and managed by the Mackenzie Alpine Trust (Lake Tekapo). The hut uses first-come, first-served sleeping and serviced bookings aren’t required; a recommended donation of $10 is left in the iron post outside the hut.

Inside, there’s an equipped kitchen and a fireplace, with mattresses available and toilets provided as a pit latrine. Drinking water is untreated, so you’ll need to filter or treat before use. Dogs aren’t allowed inside the hut, but they can be kept outside and must be controlled; they should be on a lead in riverbeds and wetlands between August and the end of February due to nesting birdlife.
