Mackay Wardens Hut

Mackay Wardens Hut is the James Mackay Hut on New Zealand’s Heaphy Track in Kahurangi National Park, a booked Great Walk stop for multi-day tramps. The hut sits on the edge of Mackay Downs in low forest with distant views of the Tasman Sea and the Heaphy River mouth (about 15 km west and roughly 750 m below). It opened in October 2014 and is set up for overnighters in separate bunk rooms.

The hut provides heating and gas cooking, with cold running water to sinks inside the hut and flush toilets attached to the hut. You’ll need to bring your own cooking utensils and sleeping bag; no showers are provided. Great Walk bookings are required through the official DOC Booking Service for Heaphy Track huts/campsites, and hut ticketing like Backcountry Hut Passes and Backcountry Hut Tickets can’t be used at this hut.

Summer pricing for the hut runs 1 October–30 April, with different rates for New Zealand residents, international visitors, and children; winter/shoulder rates are listed for 1 May–30 June, 1 July–31 August, and the remaining shoulder period. In hot spots on the track, rangers may move between huts in summer, and they check bookings and can provide track/weather information.

The approach section immediately between Saxon Hut and James Mackay Hut crosses flood-prone Mackay Downs. In extremely wet conditions a ~70 m stretch across a wetland and bridge can become impassable and dangerous—wait for water to recede before moving on. The hut is on the Saxon Hut to James Mackay Hut leg (about 3 hours walking).
