Mangaturutu Hut
Mangaturutu Hut is a backcountry hut in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke’s Bay). It sits on a high, altitudinal ridge linking the Ngaruroro and Mohaka catchments, used for short stops or as part of a through trip across the park’s Kaweka tops.
Use is first-come, first-served and no standard bookings are required. The hut has 6 bunk beds and basic interior storage (bench top and food cupboards), with rainwater supplied by a tank attached to the hut. There is an open fireplace, plus a long-drop toilet (pit latrine), and firewood storage; you’re expected to replace any firewood used.
There are multiple tramping routes to Mangaturutu Hut from road-end car parks (Makahu Saddle, Middle Hill, and the Makino road end), with travel typically involving combinations of ridge crossings and sections over the open Kaweka tops. The hut is close to the signposted Te Pukeohikarua track junction—about 15 minutes walk from that junction.
