McIntosh Hut

McIntosh Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in the Whakaari Conservation Area (Otago, Queenstown/Wakatipu area). It’s a first-come, first-served basic hut with 4 bunk beds; there’s no booking system required.

Water and toilets are limited: there’s no drinking-water provision, and toilets are not provided. In the Whakaari area, avoid using natural water sources for drinking, cooking, or washing because of contamination from historic mining activities; bring all the water you’ll need. The hut is in an advanced zone and the return trip is typically an 8–10 hour day.
