Middle Hill Hut

Middle Hill Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke’s Bay). The hut sits in a flat, sheltered clearing where manuka/kanuka scrubland meets red beech forest, at about 980 m, and it was built in 1963 and upgraded in 2003 with a large north-facing covered veranda. It’s a good base for a day or weekend tramp, including options that combine Makahu Saddle, Middle Hill Hut, and routes onward via Makahu Road or Kaweka Flats Bivouac (depending on your turnaround and transport plan).
