Moaning Tree Wall

Loading map…

Moaning Tree Wall is a small ice-climbing crag in the Cal-Cheak area south of Whistler, at the icefall left of Raven’s Breath. The wall has seven routes, ranging from 25 m to 150 m, with grades from WI3 through WI4+.

Named lines include Desperado, Mystery Roach Hotel, The Mole, The Moaner, Take Me to the Cleaners, Vegetable Alley, and Microrave. The Mole is a 150 m WI4 route near the large moaning fir, combining a few dry moves with WI3 ice; The Moaner is a shorter 25 m WI4 line finishing with a steep ice curtain.

Approach from the Cal-Cheak campsite by following the plowed road to the Bailey bridge over the Cheakamus River, then continue roughly 1 km beyond the bridge. The climbs are visible on the left. Early-season reports describe thin ice at approximately WI3–WI4, sometimes too thin for screws, so conditions directly affect protection and route choice.
