Murchison Hut (closed)
Murchison Hut (closed) was a backcountry hut in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park’s Murchison Glacier area, used by climbers and ski-tourers. The hut was owned by the New Zealand Alpine Club and managed by the Department of Conservation, with sleeping for 10 bunks (climbers’ and skiers’ hut).
The hut was closed in August 2017 due to geological instability on the mountainside beneath it. Movement linked to Murchison Glacier recession raised major safety concerns, and the structure was later removed by the New Zealand Alpine Club in early March 2026; use is not appropriate because the site has been shut down as an unsafe hazard area.
