North Mangahao Bivouac

North Mangahao Bivouac is a basic two-bunk backcountry hut in the Tararua Forest Park area, managed by the Department of Conservation. Use is free and no bookings are required—take it on a first-come, first-served basis.

Access is road-in from Scotts Road, but there are no tracks to the bivouac. The approach involves travel through bush and requires solid navigation; expect river/stream crossings to be unbridged and plan to avoid crossing if conditions make entry/exit unsafe or if water levels are high. The bivouac has sleeping bunks, no fireplace, and pit latrines.
