Onslow Hut (Steffan Memorial Hut)
Onslow Hut (Steffan Memorial Hut) is a backcountry hut in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, maintained by the South Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association and run through the Department of Conservation. It’s a basic four-bunk hut in the Onslow area, and it’s managed on a first-come, first-served basis with no bookings required.
The hut has a mattress and toilets with pit latrine disposal. There’s no fireplace provided. Use is free of DOC track access—plan your route and navigate yourself with map, compass, and GPS; avoid river crossings if conditions make entry/exit unsafe. A recommended donation of $5 per person per night can be made at the hut or through the NZDA, South Canterbury Branch to help with maintenance.
