Otaihape Lodge

Otaihape Lodge is the backcountry lodge operated by Otaihape Alpine Club on Mt Ruapehu, with a ski-run approach: it sits off the Rockgarden run, about 75 m above the skifield’s ticket plaza. It’s a self-catering club lodge built in 1974, sleeping up to 20 people across three bunkrooms (6, 6 and 8).

The lodge runs warm with electrically heated living spaces and hot showers on demand, plus a drying room downstairs for overnight-drying gear. It has a kitchen equipped for cooking (including a large gas stove, microwave, slow cooker and fridge/freezer), and you’ll need to bring your own sleeping bag; bunks include mattresses and pillows, while a pillow cover is required. Otaihape has no Wi‑Fi through the club; voice and text generally work across the mountain.

Bookings are handled through the club booking process, and the lodge is for members and visitors with set rates; groups and schools have their own booking enquiry path and rate. Key booking rules include: bookings aren’t accepted if you have outstanding hut fees/subscriptions, Saturday-night stays (in winter) require you to book an adjacent Friday or Sunday night as well, and locks/entry details are sent after full payment and confirmation. Nightly fees vary by membership category, with adult full members listed at $32 per night and adult associate/non-member at $55 per night.
