Potts Hut

Potts Hut is a Department of Conservation basic backcountry hut in Hakatere Conservation Park (Canterbury). It has 10 bunk beds and no reservation is required; it’s set up for first come, first served backcountry stays. The hut has a fireplace, mattresses, and an outhouse-style toilet with pit latrine disposal.

Access is via long approaches rather than a drive-up. From Buicks Bridge car park it’s about 29.7 km / around 11 hours on foot or a grade 3 mountain bike ride; from Mount Somers, follow Ashburton Gorge Road for 23 km then Hakatere Heron Road for 4 km. From Potts River car park it’s about 21 km / around 9 hours on foot; from Mount Somers, follow Ashburton Gorge Road as it becomes Hakatere Potts Road. Fees are free, and there is no drinking water provided.
