Poutaki Hut

Poutaki Hut is a basic four-bunk backcountry hut in Ruahine Forest Park, managed by the Department of Conservation. It has a water source from a rainwater tank, and a woodburner for heating. Fireplaces are provided, and there are toilets with pit latrine disposal.

The most common approach starts at the end of Leatherwood Road on the western side of the Wakarara Range, inside Gwavas Forest. You can walk in on foot from Wakarara road (from Ellis (Murderers) Hut) or from the Wakarara Roadend carpark to reach the track start. The route is not shown on some maps, but the track is cut and marked; from Leatherwood Road the track climbs steeply up a spur, eases off before the summit area, then drops to the hut on a north-east-facing clearing. Access is said to be advanced, and forestry vehicles operate in the area while Wakarara Road is closed beyond Leatherwood Road.
