Red Stag Hut

Red Stag Hut is a basic four-bunk backcountry hut in the Aoraki/Mount Cook area, managed by the Department of Conservation. It’s a good-use option for parties who want first-night flexibility: no bookings are required and it’s first come, first served.

The hut has toilets (pit latrine) and provides mattresses. Drinking water is untreated, so plan to treat it. A recommended donation of $5 per person per night helps maintain the hut; it can be left at the hut or through the NZDA South Canterbury branch.
