Redoubt Wall

Loading map…

Redoubt Wall, also known as Howe Sound Redoubt Wall, is a tall granitic crag above Highway 99 near Lions Bay. The wall rises roughly 240 m from its base to the summit, with highly featured rock, plentiful jugs and side-pulls, and face climbing complemented by occasional laybacking on flakes. Cracks are uncommon, and the area’s two documented routes are trad climbs, including the eight-pitch Throne Of Kings at 5.10b.

Approach from the Loggers Creek area follows an old logging grade and flagged climbers’ trail through steep coastal forest, with a short third-class step, switchbacks, a mossy bench, and a final talus-gully ascent. The route to the base is about 2 km with 375 m of elevation gain and typically takes 45–60 minutes. Highway 99 parking is sensitive: one pullout is signed No Parking, while the closer roadside option requires a high-clearance 4x4; an alternative parking spot adds about 1 km of walking. Bring a headlamp for the descent.
