Reischek Hut

Reischek Hut is a basic six-bunk backcountry hut in the Rangitata and Rakaia Rivers area (Canterbury), run by the Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai. It’s a first-come, first-served hut—no bookings are required—and it’s the type of stop suited to hunters using the hut’s Deerstalkers’ Association base in the Mid and South Canterbury area.

The hut sleeps 6 and includes a fireplace, mattresses, and toilets with pit-latrine disposal. Drinking water is untreated, so treat it before use. There’s no fee charged for use, but the NZ Deerstalkers’ Association Rakaia branch asks for a $10 per person per night donation placed in the honesty box in the hut (or via the branch contact). If you plan to cross unbridged rivers or side streams in the wider area, don’t attempt crossings when they’re flooded or you can’t find safe entry/exit points; turn back or wait for flows to drop.
