Rocks Ahead Bivouac

Rocks Ahead Bivouac is a backcountry bivouac in Kaweka Forest Park, used by trampers as a base or stopover when exploring the western areas of the park. It sits on the true right bank of the Ngaruroro River and is across the river from Rocks Ahead Hut; the bivouac can be accessed via a cableway crossing from the hut side.

Use is free and no bookings are required—spaces are first come, first served. Sleeping is provided in two bunk beds, and the site has a meat safe and a pit latrine (long-drop style). There’s no drinking water supply at the bivouac; plan to carry enough and manage waste disposal appropriately.

A cableway is used to cross the river: take time to read the on-site operating instructions before crossing. Travel caution is advised in the wider Manson Tops area when visibility is poor, since it can bring high winds and cold temperatures. Approaches include routes from Manson Hut (via Mt Manson and then descending to Rocks Ahead Bivouac via the Rocks Ahead track), or from Kiwi Mouth Hut (either crossing via Manson Hut, or climbing to the Back Ridge bivouac/track junction and then descending to Rocks Ahead Hut before crossing the river to the bivouac.
