Rocks Ahead Hut
Rocks Ahead Hut is a backcountry hut in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke’s Bay), run by the Department of Conservation. It sits on the true left bank of the Ngaruroro River at the mid-eastern boundary of the “Manson Country” area, at the junction of three major tracks, and it’s a popular stop for people doing river trips on the Ngaruroro. The hut is positioned around 700 metres altitude on a sloping site above the river and is fairly sheltered from strong westerly winds, with conditions that can include brief snowfalls and heavy winter frosts.
Use is first come, first served—standard bookings aren’t required, but you do need a Standard Hut Ticket (or a Backcountry Hut Pass) for your nights’ stay, placed in the honesty box at the hut. Inside, there are 4 bunk beds, an open fireplace, a stream water supply, and a meat safe; toilet facilities are a long-drop pit latrine. A helipad is located about 20 metres from the hut, and the main access options include approaches from Manson Hut (down via a cableway over the Ngaruroro River), Kiwi Mouth Hut (via Manson Hut or via the riverbed routes in longer, more demanding walks), and Tira Lodge (Venison Tops).
