Saint Winifreds Hut

Saint Winifreds Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in the Rangitata and Rakaia Rivers area, in Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park (Canterbury). It’s a basic nine-bunk hut used for mid–south Canterbury backcountry trips, and it’s first come, first served—no bookings are required for the hut itself.

The hut has pit latrine toilets, untreated drinking water, and a fireplace. Use is free for Canterbury Mountaineering Club (CMC) members; non-CMC users should use the CMC site for current fees and payment methods. Backcountry Hut Passes and Backcountry Hut Tickets can’t be used here, and there’s no DOC track access—route planning and navigation are required, including safe river/stream crossing decisions when routes involve unbridged water.
