Specimen Point Hut

Specimen Point Hut is a bookable backcountry hut on the Old Ghost Road in New Zealand’s South Island, managed by the Mōkihinui-Lyell Backcountry Trust. It has 14 main bunk beds plus two 4-bunk summer sleepouts and a designated tent site for up to 2 people.

Use requires a booking through the Old Ghost Road booking system (standard backcountry hut passes/tickets don’t apply). The hut is set up for self-catering: it includes gas cooking facilities, cooking equipment and utensils, crockery/cutlery, and a closed fire/wood stove; there’s rain-fed tank water and an emergency police telephone.
