Spurs Hut
Spurs Hut is a small Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park (Mid and South Canterbury). It has 4 bunks for overnight use, and it’s set up with a pit latrine; there is no drinking water provided at the hut.
Use is first come, first served with bookings not required. There is a fireplace and mattresses are provided, so plan on bringing your own basic bedding/bivvy gear as needed, plus water for the walk-in from the nearest car park at North Opuha.
DOC provides a walk-in approach starting from North Opuha car park: turn off SH79 onto Clayton Road 1 km outside Fairlie, cross the North Opuha bridge, then turn left down Fox Peak Ski Field Road to a DOC car park near the end of the road. From there it’s a walk up the road and then along the true left bank of the North Opuha River; after leaving the river, a marked easement across freehold land provides access into the conservation area.
