Stoney Creek Hut
Stoney Creek Hut is a basic, two-bunk backcountry hut in the Skippers area of Otago, run by the Department of Conservation. It’s free to use, with no bookings required—plan on arriving to the hut and using it on a first-come, first-served basis.
The hut is for self-navigation: there is no DOC track access, so bring a map, compass, and GPS and be ready to plan your own route. The hut has two bunks, a fireplace, drinking water is not provided, and toilets are available as pit latrines; take care around unbridged rivers and side streams, including knowing safe entry/exit points and turning back if conditions make crossings unsafe.
