Stoney Stream Hut

Stoney Stream Hut is a small, unserviced backcountry hut in the Hanmer Forest Park / North Canterbury and Arthur’s Pass area. It offers canvas bunks and is used as a refuge while you travel off the DOC track network—plan and navigate your own route using map, compass, and GPS.

The hut is free to use and runs on a first-come, first-served basis (no bookings required). Sleeping capacity is limited to two canvas bunks, with non-flush toilets, water from a stream, and an open fire for warmth and cooking.

Access is from over Charlies Saddle in the St James Conservation Area, with river crossings on approach. Use sensible water-safety decisions around unbridged streams and avoid crossings if conditions make entry/exit unsafe.
