Tantalus Wall
Tantalus Wall is a predominantly traditional-climbing cliff in the Stawamus Chief area of Squamish, with 18 documented routes. The wall’s defining features include a steep upper face, a pronounced roof near the headwall, and distinctive zig-zagging dykes on the right side.
The route range runs from 5.10c to 5.12c, with additional aid lines graded C3 and A5. The wall also supports substantial multi-pitch climbing: Freeway is 350 m over 11 pitches at 5.11c, while Tantalus Wall Aid reaches 300 m over nine pitches.
Notable lines include Cerberus, a 200 m, three-pitch 5.11d trad route, and Labyrinth, a five-pitch 5.12c that follows the wall’s thin dykes. Cerberus was established in 1976 by Darryl Hatten and Eric Weinstein; Labyrinth was added by Marc-André Leclerc and Luke Neufeld.
Freeway is a sustained 5.11c trad route, with most pitches at or above 5.11, and fixed anchors at each belay. Expect the area’s character to favor climbers comfortable with long, technical traditional routes and the route-finding demands of multi-pitch granite.
