Te Puia Hut (Lodge)
Te Puia Hut (Lodge) is a Department of Conservation backcountry tramp hut in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke’s Bay region). It has 26 platform bunks with mattresses and is typically used as an overnight base for tramps, day trips, and hunting in the area.
Bookings aren’t required; use is first come, first served. The hut charges $25 per night for adults (18+), $12.50 for children/youth (5–17), and infants (0–4) stay free; for each night, buy the appropriate hut ticket and place it in the honesty box at the hut. Water comes from a rain-collection tank (boil before drinking), and the facilities include a woodburner, a short-walk long-drop toilet, and space to camp outside the hut. You’ll need to bring a sleeping bag, a cooking setup (stove plus pots/pans/utensils), toilet paper, a rubbish bag, and matches or a lighter for the wood burner/fire.
