The Longhouse - Lower Canyon
The Longhouse - Lower Canyon is a Squamish trad-climbing crag on shady granite, with predominantly single-pitch crack routes ranging from vertical walls to overhanging terrain. The climbing is notably steep and wide in places, giving the area a Yosemite-like crack focus rather than the usual Squamish slab emphasis.
The Long House area contains 31 recorded trad routes, spanning roughly 5.8 to 5.13d. The lower sectors include Stratosphere, The Casino, and Bannock Buttress, while the main wall sectors include Sacred Hunting Grounds, Shape Shifter, and The Shaman.
The approach from the Shannon Creek FSR begins near kilometre marker 8 and follows orange markers for about 10–15 minutes; Stratosphere appears first, followed by The Casino, then Naughty Nurse and the Upper Longhouse. The road approach requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle.
Plan for traditional protection: a full double rack through #4, with #5 and #6 cams useful and multiples of larger pieces valuable on the offwidths. A 60 m rope covers the climbs apart from Bonghouse, for which a 70 m rope provides a more comfortable descent. Sharp granite crystals make hand taping common, and loose rock and overhead hazards warrant helmets and careful rope management.
