Waihohonu Hut
Waihohonu Hut is a 28-bunk backcountry hut in Tongariro National Park, sitting on the Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk. It’s managed by the Department of Conservation and is used as an overnight base on circuit sections between Whakapapa Village and the Waihohonu Stream area.
The hut has gas cookers on the Great Walks season dates, plus a wood burner for heating; firewood is flown in and you’re expected to limit use so there’s enough for everyone. Sleeping is in bunks (28 beds total), with pit latrines, and bookings are required for both Great Walks season and the rest of the year; same-day online bookings may be possible if space remains. Fees apply in both periods, with different adult and youth rates, and Backcountry Hut Passes can be used only from 1 May to 24 October.
