Whangaehu Hut
Whangaehu Hut is a basic four-bunk backcountry hut in Tongariro National Park, on the eastern side of Mt Ruapehu above the Whangaehu River. It’s run by the Department of Conservation in an exposed alpine environment, and the trip in is off-track with no marked DOC route.
At 2,080 m, the approach is challenging and suited to expert, well-equipped hikers with alpine experience. Navigation is required (map/compass/GPS), with extra hazards from May to November including snow and ice, frequent severe weather, and avalanche terrain. The hut has untreated drinking water, mattresses, and pit latrines; bookings are required, and Backcountry Hut Passes / Backcountry Hut Tickets can’t be used here.
