Army Hut
Army Hut is a basic four-bunk backcountry hut in the Snowdon Forest Conservation Area (Southland) run by the Department of Conservation. It’s set up for free first-come, first-served use, with a fireplace and a mattress provided, and an outside pit latrine for toilets.
Access is via walking to the Army Hut and the Upper Upukerora River area from either (1) the public track from the Kiwi Burn swingbridge via the Whitestone River, or (2) by following the Upukerora Riverbed upstream from the public access at the end of Ladies Mile Road (off Kakapo Road). The riverbed is open for public access, but parts adjacent to private land are subject to landowner permission—avoid hunting or access on adjacent private property without direct approval. The hut has no drinking water, so plan to carry your own water and bring a way to manage waste.
