Ashton Hut

Ashton Hut is a four-bunk backcountry hut in the Eyre Mountains/Taka Rā Haka Conservation Park area (Southland). It’s run by the Department of Conservation and is free to use with no bookings required—first come, first served.

The hut has a fireplace and a mattress, plus toilets with a pit latrine disposal system. Plan for a basic hut stay: bring what you need for an overnight in a small, fixed-capacity shelter and be ready for an “expert” level backcountry hut access approach, as listed by the operator.
