Big Bay Hut

Big Bay Hut is a standard nine-bunk backcountry hut run by the Department of Conservation in Fiordland National Park (north Fiordland). It’s set up for independent use with no bookings required—stays are first come, first served, using a Standard Hut Ticket placed in the honesty box for each night.

The hut provides mattresses and has a fireplace. Drinking water is untreated, and toilets use a pit latrine. Fees are charged (adult $10 per night through 30 June 2026; youth $5 per night; children/infants under 5 free), and you can also use a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12-month period.
