Big Hellfire Hut

Big Hellfire Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Rakiura National Park on Stewart Island/Rakiura, used for hunting and general access to the island’s hut network. It’s a standard 12-bunk hut with no bookings required—use works on a first-come, first-served basis, and you need a Standard Hut Ticket (or a Backcountry Hut Pass) for the night; the hut ticket is placed in the honesty box at the hut.

The hut water is not treated, so boil water before drinking. Facilities include toilets with pit latrine disposal, and the hut is equipped for dry lodging with mattresses and a fireplace.
