Bungaree Hut

Bungaree Hut is a 16-bunk backcountry hut in the Stewart Island/Rakiura area, run by the Department of Conservation. It sits in Rakiura National Park, and standard hut bookings aren’t required—stays are first come, first served with hut ticketing provided via the honesty box process (or an eligible Backcountry Hut Pass).

Fees run by night: adult (18+ years) $10 per night, youth (5–17 years) $5 per night, and children/infants (0–4 years) are free (fees update from 1 July 2026). The hut uses pit latrine toilets and has drinking water that is not treated—boil water before use, particularly because high rat numbers increase contamination risk around tank water. The hut provides mattresses and includes a fireplace.
