Cavalier Hunters Hut
Cavalier Hunters Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hunting hut in Rakiura National Park on Stewart Island/Rakiura, used for hunters who have booked surrounding hunting blocks. It’s a basic four-bunk hut with very limited facilities, so expect a shelter-only stop rather than a staffed facility.
Use is public, but bookings are required and must be arranged through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre. The hut has four bunks, mattresses, a toilet (pit latrine disposal), and a place for a fire (multi-fuel burners are provided); there are no cooking options or utensils, so bring what you need to prepare food. Water in the hut is untreated rainwater from a 1000-litre tank—boil it before drinking. Fees are $30 per person for stays up to 10 days maximum (e.g., $30 for 1 night through $30 for 9 nights).
The hut is reached via a 4–6 day round trip from Freshwater landing, with difficulty described as advanced.
