Douglas Rock Hut
Douglas Rock Hut is a standard eight-bunk backcountry hut managed by the Department of Conservation in Westland Tai Poutini National Park (Glacier area). It’s a first-come, first-served hut: no standard bookings are required, but you need a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut. Fees are $10 per night for adults (18+), $5 for youth (5–17), and free for children/infants (0–4). Use on or after 1 July 2026 uses new rates.
The hut has a fireplace and mattresses, plus drinking water from an untreated source. Toilet facilities use a pit latrine. Access and route difficulty can vary significantly in the Glacier area—when approaching from the Copland Track region, don’t attempt to climb to and cross Copland Pass unless you have a high level of mountaineering experience and the right equipment; climbers have died attempting that crossing.
