East Hawdon Bivouac

East Hawdon Bivvy is a Department of Conservation two-bunk backcountry hut in Arthur’s Pass National Park (Canterbury). It’s a basic lean-to-style shelter used for backcountry overnights, and bookings aren’t required—use is free on a first-come, first-served basis.

The hut has two bunks and includes a mattress; toilets are provided as a pit latrine, and there’s no fireplace or drinking water. Access is off established DOC tracks, so you need to plan your own route and do navigation yourself. River crossings are a key risk if you encounter unbridged streams—avoid crossing if conditions are unsafe or water is high.
