Edwards Hut

Loading map…

Edwards Hut is a serviced 16-bunk backcountry hut in Arthur’s Pass National Park (Canterbury), run by the Department of Conservation. It’s on radio link to the Arthur’s Pass Visitor Centre and is monitored during office hours (8:30am–4:30pm, 7 days a week except Christmas Day). The hut has a log burner for heating; bring your own cooker and utensils.

Access involves multiple river crossings, so avoid the trip during and after heavy rainfall and plan for fast-rising rivers. From the Greyneys shelter car park, cross the Bealey River just above its confluence with the Mingha River, then cross the Mingha River (look for the orange triangle marker on the opposite bank). After about 1 km in forest, you’ll spend time in the riverbed and later need to cross the Edwards River East Branch; take extreme care on the sections that rise and fall while avoiding steep gullies above the Edwards River canyon. After working through red tussocks, the track briefly returns to the forest before you reach the river flats with a clear line to Edwards Hut.
