Esk Bivouac
Esk Bivouac is a small Department of Conservation backcountry hut in the Lochinvar Forest Conservation Area (North Canterbury and Arthur’s Pass area). It’s a basic two-bunk hut that’s first come, first served—bookings aren’t required. The hut has canvas bunks, a toilet (pit latrine), and a fireplace; it does not provide drinking water and there are no mattresses.
It has no DOC track access, so you’ll need to plan your route and navigate independently (map, compass, and GPS). Use is free, but you need permission for access across pastoral lease land; contact the Arthur’s Pass National Park Visitor Centre for permission arrangements.
