George Sound Hut

George Sound Hut is a standard eight-bunk backcountry hut in western Fiordland, within Fiordland National Park, managed by the Department of Conservation. It’s set up for overnight use on multi-day trips, with standard hut bookings not required—stay is first come, first served, and you need to buy a Standard Hut Ticket and put it in the honesty box at the hut (or use a Backcountry Hut Pass).

Inside, the hut provides mattresses and has a fireplace, and water is supplied as untreated drinking water. Toilets are provided with disposal by pit latrine. For fees, adults (18+) pay $10 per night and youth (5–17) pay $5 per night (children/infants 0–4 are free) up to 30 June 2026; fees from 1 July 2026 update to new rates.
